About / MGIMO

The Investor Fintech student research club

We are building a community of like-minded people who enjoy getting to the bottom of economics and want to understand what is happening around them.

We host meetings and events, invite leading experts and practitioners as speakers, take part in international conferences and give students the chance to broaden their knowledge and professional skills.

Mission

To build a community where students can get to grips with economics, try their hand at real projects and talk to market professionals.

The economy already affects you — time to affect it back!

Nikita, club president
01

Our interests

Economics, investing, finance and fintech. If a topic falls into any of these areas, it is ours!

02

Data sources

We work with primary sources: Bank of Russia publications and research, Rosstat data, and the financial statements of companies and issuers.

03

Understanding

Students learn to see economics not as a separate academic field but as part of everyday life for all of us. We provide the tools — putting them to use is up to you.

Areas

The club’s three areas

Three points on one curve. Open any of them to see how it works.

01 / ECONOMICS — DETAIL

We examine economic episodes from history and trace the less obvious links between cause and effect.

What we study. The key rate, inflation, Rosstat statistics, Bank of Russia publications and industry reviews.

Format. One in-depth session every two weeks: we look at real business models, the phenomena behind them, their strategies, industry trends and key events.

Sample session. “Russia’s key rate has been cut by 25 bp” — we look at how this affects households, what happens to bank deposits and why it moves the exchange rate.

02 / INVESTING — DETAIL

We explore investment instruments and financial services that are often little known, even among people in finance. We also build and manage the club’s own investment portfolio.

What we study. Equities, bonds, currencies and derivatives as a toolkit — and the job each of them does in a portfolio.

Format. Sessions revolve around real quotes and financial statements: we calculate multiples, assess risk and break down where returns come from.

Sample session. We take an issuer from the Moscow Exchange index, value it using multiples and DCF, compare the result with the market and defend a thesis — buy, hold or exit — including the point at which we would admit we were wrong.

03 / PROFESSIONAL COMMUNITY — DETAIL

We organise meetings with experts and business leaders, host open events and attend industry conferences.

Our main goal is to create a space where students can gain knowledge, put their questions to professionals and build useful connections.

Leadership

Nikita, club president

Nikita sets the club’s direction and leads the team: he brings people together around a shared goal, divides responsibilities between the departments and is accountable for the club’s growth. He launches new projects, arranges meetings with experts and practitioners, and represents the club to partners and the university.

A club does not rest on one person. It rests on a team that has work to do and a reason to come together.

Principles

Four rules the club runs on

Nobody debates them at the door — we simply work by them. Everything else in the club follows from these four lines.

01

Data over opinions

A claim without a number is just a feeling. At our meetings it will not get past the first question: show us the calculation.

02

Primary sources over retellings

A company report, a regulator’s publication, an exchange time series. A link to someone else’s review does not count as a source.

03

Conclusions you can defend

Every analysis ends with a one-page thesis, complete with its assumptions, its risks and the point at which the author would admit being wrong.

04

A community of like-minded people

Analysis works where everyone gets a chance to speak and to hear objections. We are building an environment in which students ask questions on an equal footing with practitioners rather than sitting through a lecture.
